The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Burton Wayne Campbell (AFSN: AO-3122594), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Pilot over North Vietnam on 22 June 1966. On that date, Lieutenant Campbell was tasked with providing protection for other flights from SA-2 missile sites deep in hostile territory. During an attack on one of the threatening missile sites, Lieutenant Campbell positioned his rocket and camera-laden F-105 in front of his flight to draw fire away from them, and to photograph the effectiveness of the AOM-45 against SA-2 missile sites. Lieutenant Campbell courageously followed the AOM-45 through a hail of flak to confirm its success and to further damage the site with 20-mm. cannon fire. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Campbell reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
