The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Russell Frank Brownlee (AFSN: AO-3130006), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-105 Electronic Warfare Officer of the 333d Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, PACIFIC Air Force, in action over North Vietnam, on 19 November 1967. On that date, Captain Brownlee’s aircraft was severely damaged by a Surface-to-Air missile while he was assisting another pilot who had received battle damage and had been wounded. Captain Brownlee refused to leave his comrade until other escort aircraft could be vectored in to give the wounded pilot assistance in reaching his home base safely. Then, and only then, did Captain Brownlee egress to a safer area, where he was forced to eject from his own stricken aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Brownlee reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
