The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Barry Bruton Bridger, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4C Aircraft Commander near Hanoi, North Vietnam on 23 January 1967. On that date, while flying in a flight of four aircraft on combat air patrol, Lieutenant Bridger, despite a serious degradation of his own electronic defensive capability, elected to remain with his flight in order to afford the maximum possible flight protection in a hostile environment. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Bridger reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
