The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Richard Eugene Bolstad (AFSN: 0-17431461), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight while serving as an A-1 pilot with the 602d Fighter Squadron at Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Bai Thoung, North Vietnam, on 6 November 1965. On that date, while participating in search and rescue operations, Captain Bolstad’s flight was heavily engaged by hostile anti-aircraft fire. Captain Bolstad elected to remain over the hostile area for over an hour in search of a fellow aviator. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bolstad reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
