The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Corporal Andrew C. Conte, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving as the 3d Squad Leader, 1st Platoon, Company L, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines (Reinforced), Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Afghanistan, from 15 November 2008 to 1 June 2009, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Corporal Conte’s untiring efforts to lead and train his Marines positively impacted the operations of Company L and were vital to the success of his squad in numerous engagements with enemy forces. As a squad leader in 1st Platoon, Corporal Conte was tasked with commanding the Quick Reaction Force for all of Company L’s operations. He constantly ensured his Marines were prepared for any contingency and were able to immediately respond for any contingency and were able to immediately respond to the Company’s needs on numerous occasions, specifically four which required immediate casualty evacuation, two while under heavy enemy fire. During this time, Corporal Conte also led more than 40 combat patrols in an area with a high concentration of Improvised Explosive Devices and directed his squad in four additional engagements with enemy forces. Corporal Conte put himself at the main point of friction in every squad task and pushed his squad hard in training in order to ensure the combat readiness of his Marines. His constant devotion to the welfare of his Marines and his tactically sound decisions set the example for all combat leaders to emulate. By his steadfast leadership, courageous actions, and exceptional dedication to duty, Corporal Conte reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
