Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Order No. G-374 (March 14, 1967)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Richard Manford Baughn (AFSN: FR-25705), United States Air Force, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as an F-105 Pilot with the 388th Combat Support Group, near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 18 September 1966. On that date, while leading a flight of four F-105s against an extremely heavily defended railroad and highway bridge, Colonel Baughn continued on to the target despite the fact he was continuously under intense artillery fire, subjected to numerous SA-2 missile attacks and attacked by hostile aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Baughn has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
