The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Leif E. Arvidson, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Pleiku Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 14 September 1969. On that date, Sergeant Arvidson was a member of a rescue alert crew that rushed to the scene of a crashed United States Army UH-1H helicopter in an attempt to save the lives of four crewmembers. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Arvidson, despite the hazards of exploding ammunition and burning fuel cells, unhesitantly searched the burning wreckage until it was determined that further assistance was not necessary. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Arvidson has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
