Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Order G-1817 (October 25, 1967)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Ralph Emerson Adams (AFSN: FR-54630/AO-3069437), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an F-105F Thunderchief “Wild Weasel” Pilot of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, PACIFIC Air Forces, in action over North Vietnam on 11 August 1967. On that date, Major Adams was a member of the surface-to-air missile suppression flight fragged to support a strike against a vital and heavily defended bridge near Hanoi. Despite marginal weather, five surface-to-air missiles launched at his element, heavy barrages of deadly anti-aircraft artillery, and visual contact with hostile interceptors, Major Adams successfully led his element in destroying a hostile surface-to-air missile site and a flak site while keeping the defenses occupied so the strike force could ingress to the target safely. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Adams has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
