The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfred I. Thomas (MCSN: 0-45440/405931), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Sergeant of a Self-Propelled 75-mm. Platoon of Weapons Company, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Mariana Islands, on 16 June 1944. In the semi-darkness of early dawn, Sergeant Thomas braved intense hostile fire to bring his half tracks to an advantageous position where he coolly held them together while they delivered effective fire which furnished protective cover for the withdrawal of the infantry. His skill, leadership and courageous devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on Sergeant Thomas and the United States Naval Service.
