The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Andrew R. Robinson (MCSN: 2415765), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader with Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 10 August 1969, while occupying a night defensive position near the Demilitarized Zone in Quang Tri province, Corporal Robinson’s platoon came under a vicious ground attack by a North Vietnamese Army company reinforced by sappers utilizing automatic weapons fire, rocket-propelled grenades, and satchel charges. Reacting instantly, Corporal Robinson fearlessly exposed himself to the hostile fire as he directed the fire of his men against the hostile soldiers and assisted the Company Commander in adjusting supporting Marine artillery fire on the advancing enemy. As the fierce fire fight continued, the North Vietnamese Army unit concentrated its attention on the Marine machine gun emplacements in a desperate attempt to breach the lines. Although suffering pain from a wound, Corporal Robinson was determined to prevent any enemy penetration and utilized grenades and claymore mines as he vigorously defended his position. After exhausting his ammunition, he seized two abandoned hostile weapons and, heedless of the enemy rounds impacting all around him, ran from one Marine to another, encouraging his companions to maximum combat effort and ensuring that all possible avenues of approach were adequately covered with fire power. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the defeat of the North Vietnamese Army company by the vastly outnumbered Marine platoon. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Corporal Robinson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
