The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Charles Patrinos (MCSN: 410434), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as First Sergeant of Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 May 1967, during Operation BEACON STAR, Company E came under an intense enemy mortar attack while preparing for an assault on Hill 881 North. Although painfully wounded three times in the initial moments of the attack, First Sergeant Patrinos, displaying exceptional leadership and professional knowledge, unhesitatingly moved through the fire-swept area, located the casualties and organized and directed the expeditious evacuation of the seriously wounded. Steadfastly refusing medical attention and evacuation, he remained with his company throughout the engagement. On the morning of 3 May, his unit came under intense automatic weapons and mortar fire. Demonstrating superior tactical knowledge, he skillfully assisted in the organization of the defensive positions, thereby maintaining the security and effective functioning of the command post. Although his wounds were extremely painful, he repeatedly exposed himself to accurate sniper fire and directed the orderly movement and evacuation of the wounded Marines. When the commanding officer was medically evacuated, he ably assisted the executive officer in reorganizing the company until he was evacuated on 5 May. His exceptional professionalism and unfaltering dedication were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, steadfast determination, and selfless devotion to duty, First Sergeant Patrinos upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
