The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Michael McKeever, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 January 1863, while serving with Company K, 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry, in action at Burnt Ordinary, Virginia. Private McKeever was one of a small scouting party that charged and routed a mounted force of the enemy six times their number. He led the charge in a most gallant and distinguished manner, going far beyond the call of duty.
