The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Lester W. Konrady (MCSN: 2124523), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 July 1966. While on a search and clear operation in Quang Tri Province, Corporal Konrady’s fire team was engaged in a firefight with the enemy when he noticed one of his wounded companions lying in the open, in the direct line of heavy automatic weapons fire. Four other Marines attempted to aid the exposed Marine but each time were driven back by heavy fire. Realizing that his comrade needed immediate medical assistance, Corporal Konrady unhesitatingly braved the intense hostile fire to run to the wounded man and carry him thirty meters to a safe position. His disregard for his own safety and heroic actions throughout were an inspiration to all who observed him. By his bravery in the face of the enemy, bold initiative and unfalter_ing dedication to duty, Corporal Konrady upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
