The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jacob P. Jereb (MCSN: 575521), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against dissident forces an Hsin-Ho, China, on 5 April 1947. When a large number of dissident forces penetrated his sentinel post at the ammunition supply point, Private First Class Jereb unhesitatingly opened fire and, although exposed to an intense volley of automatic weapons and grenade fire at close range, continued to direct an accurate stream of small-arms fire at the onrushing attackers until he fell, wounded by the hostile fire. His quick initiative, personal courage, and unselfish devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
