The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Quiles Ray Jacobs (MCSN: 2235586), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 June 1968, while conducting a search and destroy operation near DaNang, Company B suddenly came under intense mortar and small arms fire from a large North Vietnamese force. Reacting instantly, Corporal Jacobs quickly deployed his men into advantageous firing positions. Alertly observing two casualties lying in an area dangerously exposed to the hostile fire, he fearlessly ran across 100 meters of fire-swept terrain to the position of the injured men. Although he was seriously wounded, he skillfully administered first aid to his wounded comrades and assisted them to covered positions. Ignoring his painful injury, he resolutely returned to his squad and discovered that his comrades were temporarily halted by enemy sniper fire. Disregarding his own safety, Corporal Jacobs unhesitatingly launched an aggressive attack against a hostile emplacement and killed a North Vietnamese sniper with a hand grenade. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, superb leadership and unswerving devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Jacobs upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
