The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Rickey Wayne Hall (MCSN: 2471142), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 10 August 1969, while Lance Corporal Hall’s platoon occupied a night defensive position northwest of the Vandegrift Combat Base, the Marines came under a vicious ground attack by a North Vietnamese Army company. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal Hall vigorously defended his position against the advancing hostile soldiers. As the enemy approached to within a few meters of his fighting hole and managed to throw satchel charges and grenades into his position, Lance Corporal Hall fearlessly hurled the explosives back at them. Seriously wounded by the detonation of one of the charges, he ignored his painful injuries and valiantly continued to confront the determined North Vietnamese Army unit, enabling other Marines to evacuate his wounded companions. Valiantly defending his position, he was wounded three more times before he would permit his companions to move him to a more secure area for medical attention. His heroic actions and determined efforts inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the defeat of the enemy. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Lance Corporal Hall upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
