The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Bertly V. Englade, Jr. (MCSN: 2384912), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company E, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Early on the morning of 4 April 1969, during Operation MAINE CRAG, Company E was occupying a night defensive position. Suddenly the Marines came under an intense ground attack by a company-sized North Vietnamese Army unit, employing mortars, automatic weapons, and rocket-propelled grenades. When the Marines sustained heavy casualties in one sector of the perimeter, and a gap developed in the defensive lines, Corporal Englade unhesitatingly rushed to the vulnerable point, arriving there at the same time as several advancing enemy soldiers. Fearlessly firing at the attackers, he killed three, stopping the penetration, and then steadfastly remained in his precarious position even though he was seriously wounded, until reinforcements arrived from other sections of the perimeter. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the successful defense of his company’s position. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Englade upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
