The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Richard Eugene Cutbirth (MCSN: 2377740), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Third Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 28 May 1968, while occupying a defensive position southeast of Khe Sanh, Company F came under heavy attack by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal Cutbirth skillfully directed the delivery of accurate machine gun fire upon the enemy. When elements of his company became dangerously low of ammunition during the ensuing fire fight, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense fire and moved from one position to another, distributing critically needed ammunition and shouting words of encouragement to his comrades. On several occasions, he boldly maneuvered about the fire-swept terrain, moving injured Marines to positions of relative safety and administering first aid. As the enemy advanced to within fifteen meters of his squad’s position, Lance Corporal Cutbirth fearlessly commenced throwing hand grenades at the attacking force, inflicting numerous casualties and forcing the North Vietnamese soldiers to withdraw. Seizing a rifle, he steadfastly directed accurate fire on the enemy until he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Cutbirth upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
