The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Jimmy D. Curry (MCSN: 2196774), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, on 21 September 1967. While on a search and destroy operation in Quang Tri Province, Corporal Curry’s platoon was taken under intense enemy fire by a numerically superior enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved his machine gun forward to the initial contact point, delivering devastating fire upon the enemy. Observing that his squad was receiving numerous casualties, he unhesitatingly raced into an open field to deliver accurate fire onto the enemy positions and to effect an evacuation of three wounded Marines from an exposed area. He steadfastly stood his ground until the three Marines were removed. Although wounded, he valiantly continued to deliver withering fire upon the enemy until he was mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, dauntless courage and devotion to his fellow Marines, Corporal Curry was instrumental in saving three Marines from further injury or possible death thereby upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
