The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Eddie N. Corsino (MCSN: 2478857), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 September 1969, Company was inserted by helicopter into an area eleven miles northeast of Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province and immediately came under fire from a large, well-concealed enemy force. When his squad became temporarily separated from the remainder of the unit, Lance Corporal Corsino quickly established a machine gun position and directed fire on the hostile soldiers. Although painfully wounded during the initial burst of fire, and wounded a second time by fragments from an exploding rocket-propelled grenade, he continued to courageously man his machine gun with complete disregard for his own safety as he covered the area with accurate machine gun fire. Displaying tremendous fortitude and determination in the face of the numerically superior force, Lance Corporal Corsino steadfastly maintained his position and delivered deadly accurate fire against the attacking hostile soldiers until he received a third and fatal wound. As a result of his heroic actions, the lives of several of his wounded comrades were saved and his squad’s position was stabilized. By his courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of extreme danger, Lance Corporal Corsino inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
