War Department, General Orders No. 104 (September 13, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Second Lieutenant Vernon C. Clark (MCSN: 0-13867), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for gallantry in action whole commanding a platoon of Company A, First Battalion, First Marine Parachute Regiment, on 28 December 1943, at Bougainville, British Solomon Islands. When his leading assault platoon was hit by fierce enemy fire following a strenuous march through dense swamp and jungle, Lieutenant Clark fearlessly exposed himself, led his men in a daring attack, and personally destroyed the occupants of two enemy emplacements. Because of Lieutenant Clark’s heroic example, the platoon seized its objective and contributed greatly to the successful accomplishment of the Company’s mission. Second Lieutenant Clark’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Marine Corps.
