The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Henry W. Bernard, Jr. (MCSN: 2322441), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with as a Mortarman with Headquarters and Service Company, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 July 1967. During Operation KINGFISDHER, while engaged in a search and destroy mission, the battalion came under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and accurate mortar fire and immediately sustained numerous casualties, increasing as the fighting continued. To expedite evacuation, tanks were utilized to transport the casualties to a landing zone, where helicopters would further transport them to medical facilities. On one such occasion, a tank laden with wounded was suddenly pinpointed by deadly accurate enemy mortar and small arms fire endangering the lives of those aboard. Lance Corporal Bernard, observing that the tank was in imminent danger, with complete disregard for his own safety, rushed forward from his relatively safe position to aid those who could not leave the tank and seek cover by themselves. This courageous act was repeated numerous times, until Lance Corporal Bernard fell mortally wounded by small arms fire. His selfless efforts and bold initiative were an inspiration to all who observed him and undoubtedly were responsible for saving many lives. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
