The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Robert A. Bates (MCSN: 0-91299), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy during Operation KERN in the Republic of Vietnam, on 22 October 1966. The First Platoon with First Lieutenant Bates commanding, was assigned the mission of assaulting a particularly well-defended Viet Cong position located across a rain-swollen river and atop a hill devoid of cover. Leading the only squad to cross the river, First Lieutenant Bates drove relentlessly forward despite intense fire from both flanks and his front, until he and the squad had secured the objective. Once on the objective, he quickly established his men in a defensive perimeter and began to conduct a survey of the immediate area. During this reconnaissance he was hit by enemy machine-gun fire and fell mortally wounded. By his outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Bates served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
