The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Edward John Banks (MCSN: 0-76822), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding officer of Company H, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam, from 29 to 31 January 1967. During this period Captain Banks determinedly and aggressively led his company during numerous attacks on fortified Viet Cong positions. On 29 January, despite heavy losses incurred by one of his platoons earlier in the day, he reorganized the platoon and led them through withering small arms and automatic weapons fire to aid a platoon which was pinned down and suffering heavy casualties. By his skillful employment of his unit, and spirited leadership, the enemy force was routed and the lives of many Marines were undoubtedly saved. On 31 January, while leading his company against strongly entrenched Viet Cong insurgents, heavy enemy fire pinned down his unit and mortally wounded a platoon commander. While directing a helicopter medical evacuation, Captain Banks simultaneously prepared his company for an assault. In large measure due to his superb tactical skill and courageous fighting spirit, the company successfully routed the enemy and secured the position. During the entire three day operation, Captain Banks completely disregarded his own personal safety and continuously exposed himself to the danger of enemy fire in order to direct the movement of his company and encourage his men. Largely due to the efforts of Captain Banks, his company played a vital role in the accomplishment of the search and destroy operation and in the destruction of over one hundred Viet Cong. By his uncommon leadership, courageous actions and inspiring dedication to duty, Captain Banks upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
