The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lawrence Kenneth Arthur (MCSN: 2380637), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 29 May 1968, while occupying a defensive position southeast of Khe Sanh, Company F came under heavy attack by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Arthur unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire and commenced firing his weapon and throwing hand grenades at the attacking force, killing several hostile soldiers. Realizing that an adjacent unit was in danger of being overrun, he fearlessly maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain and assisted the Marines in repulsing the enemy’s assault. Despite being seriously wounded, he boldly returned to his squad and continued to deliver accurate fire on the enemy. Alertly observing a North Vietnamese soldier attempting to penetrate the perimeter, Private First Class Arthur quickly rushed forward and killed the enemy soldier. Refusing to seek cover, he steadfastly continued his determined efforts until he succumbed to his wounds. His heroic actions and aggressive fighting spirit inspired all who served with him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Arthur upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
