The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George W. Adams, III (MCSN: 2337404), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 June 1969, while occupying a defensive position along his company’s perimeter, Corporal Adams was on radio watch when the perimeter came under an intense enemy ground attack, supported by mortar and rocket propelled grenades. Reacting immediately, he alerted the entire perimeter. Under cover of the incoming fire, a force of North Vietnamese Army Infantry assaulted the position. During the ensuing battle, Corporal Adams retrieved an M-79 from a fallen Marine and produced a devastating barrage on the enemy, while constantly exposing himself to the intense fire and directing the fire of his men. Observing that a machine gun position had been overrun by hostile forces, he fearlessly left his position and, with complete disregard for his own safety, rushed toward the enemy, encouraging his own men to follow. As he assaulted the machine gun position and directed an intense barrage of fire on the enemy, he inflicted several casualties and caused the enemy force to flee. Through Corporal Adams’ inspiring leadership, courageous actions, and undaunted dedication, the enemy’s attack was repulsed and the perimeter secured; thereby reflecting credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
