The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Robert Howard York (ASN: 0-21341), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, at Saint Cloud, Algeria, 8, 9, and 10 November 1942. During the Oran offensive, on 8 November 1942, Major York, under constant fire by the enemy, encouraged and assisted the forward movement of his battalion. On 9 November 1942, Major York led a detachment of troops which succeeded in entering the town of Saint Cloud. This detachment was cut off for an entire day, but finally escaped under cover of darkness and rejoined its battalion. On the final day of the Oran offensive, Major York again directed his troops from the front lines under heavy enemy fire. During all three days of battle, Major York’s bravery and leadership, above the call of duty, were an inspiration and example to the men of his battalion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major York, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
