The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Kenneth W. Wallace (ASN: 0-361171), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Guemar, France, on 22 January 1945. When a Company of his Battalion was bogged down on the edge of a minefield and disorganized by withering enemy fire, Colonel Wallace fearlessly crossed the uncharted mine belt and, by his intrepid example, inspired the men to follow him. Leading the unit over a foot bridge covered by machine gun fire, he exposed himself to small arms fire at point-blank range to direct the assault on formidable enemy emplacements and personally captured six of the enemy. His intrepid leadership insured the success of the Battalion’s attack. Lieutenant Colonel Wallace’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
