The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Claiborne Holmes Kinnard, Jr. (ASN: 0-383723), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Mustang Fighter Airplane in the 355th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces on 24 June 1944, in the European Theater of Operations. On the morning mission, one flight, which was separated from the group at the time, sighted a well-camouflaged airfield with a large number of aircraft on it. Upon obtaining this information, Colonel Kinnard asked for and received permission to lead his Group in an attack on the field in the afternoon. During the course of the attack, he observed a smartly concealed gun emplacement from which was coming a hail of fire. Colonel Kinnard quickly diverted his attack on the aircraft, and in the face of intense fire, made a vigorous assault on the gun installations, completely silencing them. Having accomplished this, he led his group on another devastating attack against the planes parked on the airdrome. When the gave the order to return, the group had destroyed twenty-five aircraft and severely damaged an additional six. The high degree of success achieved on this mission is in a large measure attributable to the courage, determination, and aggressive leadership of Colonel Kinnard.
