Richard Hastings Ellis earned a bachelor of arts degree in history from Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1941. During World War II he flew more than 200 combat missions and, returning to school after the war, earned his juris doctor degree from Dickinson School of Law in 1949. He was recalled to duty during the Korean War, serving in state-side assignments. he served from 1973 to 1975 as the 14th Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and retired in 1981 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
