The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Martin Schwenk (aka: George Martin), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 3 July 1863, while serving with Company B, 6th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Millerstown (Gettysburg Battle), Pennsylvania, for bravery in an attempt to carry a communication through the enemy’s lines. Sergeant Schwenk also rescued an officer from the hands of the enemy.
