The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Murray S. Pulver (ASN: 0-1310371), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company B, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 August 1944, in France. When a platoon of the company he was commanding was in dire need of ammunition, Captain Pulver personally led a carrying party across terrain covered by intense enemy fire, to deliver the necessary supplies. While on this mission Captain Pulver noticed two severely wounded men from another company, lying helpless on the battlefield where enemy machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire was falling. As soon as he returned to his command post, Captain Pulver obtained litter bearers and personally led them toward the wounded men. Enemy fire was so intense that only one of the litter bearers could be persuaded to enter the hazardous sector. Undaunted, Captain Pulver put one of the wounded men upon his back and carried him to safety. Inspired by his courage, the other litter bearers, who had remained behind, came forward and removed the other man. As a direct result of his courage and unselfish leadership, two men were saved from death. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Pulver reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Murray S. Pulver (ASN: 0-1310371), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 July 1944, in France. When intense enemy fire inflicted numerous casualties and wounded the leader of another platoon, Captain Pulver, commanding the reserve platoon, moved forward and assumed command. The platoon was on the verge of panic due to a murderous enemy onslaught when Captain Pulver fearlessly exposed himself and urged them to remain steadfast. With a bazooka, he personally knocked out two enemy tanks and killed a number of enemy infantry with rifle grenades. He then rescued a wounded man from an exposed position. Captain Pulver’s extraordinary heroism was responsible for thwarting the counter-attack and forced the enemy to withdraw completely. The extraordinary heroism and courageous actions of Captain Pulver exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 30th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
