The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George Peter Nestor (ASN: 0-1998488), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 19 and 20 March 1945. During action near Burch, Rendhausen and Limberg, Germany, Lieutenant Nestor fearlessly advanced in the face of intense enemy fire, killed four members of a German patrol and set up his mortar observation post in an exposed but favorable position. He successfully adjusted mortar fire on enemy concentrations and for two days continued to move his observation post, fighting his way to advantageous positions and braving intense enemy artillery fire. Although painfully wounded he continued to adjust friendly fire on the three enemy-held towns and on a mass of enemy troops and equipment preparing for a counterattack. Lieutenant Nestor’s tenacious gallantry and heroic devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the armed forces.
