The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Daniel Oswald Curran (ASN: 0-5339593), United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Curran distinguished himself by heroic actions on 22 May 1968, while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. A numerically superior enemy force attacked the battalion’s forward location. As the battle progressed, Lieutenant Curran noted that the Company Commander had no communication with the company because someone was keying the net. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Curran left the safety of his track and exposed himself to the intense hostile fire, as he moved from track to track until he cleared the net enabling the company commander to effectively control the company. Lieutenant Curran then continued to move from track to track directing the machine gunner’s fire and pointing out enemy positions. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the enemy force. Lieutenant Curran’s personal bravery , aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
