The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Charles Bernise Bryan (ASN: 0-390490), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 10 and 11 November 1944. On 10 November, Captain Bryan fearlessly led his company in a bold assault on a strong enemy position near Inglange, France, inspiring his men by his conspicuous, heroic leadership. Following his example, the company assaulted with bayonets and grenades and killed and captured nearly a hundred of the enemy. On 11 November, Captain Bryan again distinguished himself by personally leading his company against another strong enemy position, again inspiring his men to take the objective and inflict tremendous losses of men and materiel upon the enemy. Captain Bryan’s heroic determination, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
