The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Coast Artillery Corps) Robert Frank Augur (Auger), (ASN: 0-301982), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 92d Coast Artillery Regiment (Philippine Scouts), U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps (Philippine Islands), in action against enemy forces at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on 12 April 1942. During particularly heavy shelling of the island defenses of Manila Bay, several projectiles from enemy artillery landed near Lieutenant Augur’s unit. Several men were wounded and a number of fires were started. Voluntarily, and without hesitation, Lieutenant Augur dashed from his shelter while the heavy shelling was still in progress. He succeeded in moving the wounded to covered positions and then extinguished the fires. The unselfish courage of this intrepid officer in the face of terrific hazards resulted in saving the lives of several of his men. First Lieutenant Augur’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
