The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) John Richardson Alison (ASN: 0-21393), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane of the 16th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group, TENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, on 28 April 1943. Lieutenant Colonel Alison took off in a fight plane from a base in Chine while the base was under heavy bombardment attack. Although the enemy was 15,000 feet above the field, he estimated their return course, and after a pursuit of 80 miles made the interception. He immediately attacked the formation of approximately 40 planes and at the same time radioed instructions to other flights in the air. In the ensuing fight Lieutenant Colonel Allison definitely downed one enemy plane and probably destroyed another. During the attack on the superior enemy force, 10 enemy planes were shot out of the air and eight more probably destroyed, without loss to our own forces. For his actions in taking off in the face of a bombing attack and probable strafing was an inspiring act of gallantry; his cool thinking and logical deduction while under fire made this interception and resulting victory possible. His enthusiasm and offensive spirit in combat has inspired the embers of our fighting forces in China and reflects much credit on his personal record. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Alison, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
