The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel Pierre Douchy, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Engineer with the First French Army, in action against enemy forces in France and Germany, on 31 March and 23 April 1945. During the initial river crossings by improvised means at Germersheim, Colonel Douchy’s personal action and presence at the most exposed points inflamed the ardor of engineer crews which were decimated by enemy artillery and automatic-weapons fire. Always at the scene of the greatest danger, he directed the construction of bridges across the river which enabled friendly forces to sustain and subsequently to amplify the pace of their operations in Germany. At Kembs on 23 April 1945, Colonel Douchy again led his units to the enemy-held banks under murderous machine-gun fire and was completely successful in creating the final bridgehead for the encirclement of the enemy forces attempting to withdraw toward Switzerland. The gallant leadership and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Douchy reflect highest credit upon himself and the Allied Forces.
