Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 157 (July 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Paul Lee Zaring (ASN: 37243322), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Cannon Company, 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 6 March 1945. On that date, when the enemy attacked and surrounded the town of Obersehr, Germany, Private Zaring was isolated from his platoon but heroically remained at his position as outpost guard and fiercely resisted enemy attempts to destroy vital artillery pieces. When his comrade was seriously wounded he administered first and although exposed to intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire, resumed his dauntless defenses, killing eight enemy soldiers and harassing those who had the remainder of the platoon pinned down. Private Zaring’s cool courage and unflinching devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
