The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Joseph E. Williams (ASN: 37491590), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 315th Engineer Combat Battalion, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 6 December 1944. On that date, during house-to-house fighting in Pachten, Germany, Sergeant Williams volunteered to breach a strong enemy pillbox that was impeding the advance. Advancing against heavy fire he reached the strong point, and although wounded, succeeded in firing his demolition charge. Refusing evacuation, this courageous soldier advanced against another pillbox, and, although wounded a second time, fired a charge which forced the surrender of sixteen of the enemy. Sergeant Williams’ conspicuous heroism, determination, and loyal devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
