The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Dora Wilcox (ASN: 34365044), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 1 December 1944. The Infantry Company to which Private Wilcox was assigned was attacked by a strong force supported by light and heavy machine guns, mortars and tanks. Within an hour the enemy had worked to within twenty yards of the Company’s position and were hurling hand grenades, one landing in the foxhole occupied by Private Wilcox and two other men. Without thought of his own safety, and knowing that his action was extremely dangerous and might result in personal disaster, Private Wilcox quickly placed his foot on the grenade and pressed it into the ground. When the explosion came, his comrades were uninjured, but he was severely wounded by the fragmentation. Private Wilcox’s bold and heroic action, at the risk of his life, saved two comrades from injury or death through enemy action. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
