The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Joseph E. Volansky (ASN: 33275668), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces during the North Africa Campaign, on 23 April 1943. Private First Class Volansky deemed it necessary to move his 81-mm. mortar forward in order to lay more accurate fire on the enemy. Moving under enemy observation and artillery fire to a new position he was engaged in placing his mortar in action when killed. His coolness and courage in going forward and controlling the movements of his squad was an inspiration to all. Private First Class Volansky’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
