The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Lieutenant Colonel Loyd Wheaton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 9 April 1865, while serving with 8th Illinois Infantry, in action at Fort Blakely, Alabama. Lieutenant Colonel Wheaton led the right wing of his regiment, and, springing through an embrasure, was the first to enter the enemy’s works, against a strong fire of artillery and infantry.
