The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Robert Eugene Tucker (ASN: 0-19938), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. Colonel Tucker was directing the attack of his battalion on the Siegfried Line from a forward observation point when an enemy shell set fire to a vital dump of white phosphorous ammunition close by. Without regard for his personal safety, he dashed across the fire-swept hill top to fight the fire. Although he was painfully burned by the exploding ammunition, he did not seek medical aid until he had extinguished the fire and saved much of the important ammunition. Such gallantry under conditions of great danger merits the highest respect for Colonel Tucker. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Tucker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
