The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles Anthony Tofuri (ASN: 20105998), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 182d Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against enemy forces on 14 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. When his patrol leader was injured while contacting enemy ridge positions, Sergeant Tofuri moved to the head of the patrol. On his way forward he killed two enemy riflemen, and continued a steady fire upon enemy positions until a wound in the arm rendered him incapable of operating his rifle. Although bleeding freely from his wound, he crawled to a position from which he could estimate the strength and disposition of enemy troops, and, signaling for reinforcements he assisted the forces by pointing out targets and enemy positions. After the patrol leader was again wounded, this time fatally, Sergeant Tofuri directed the withdrawal from the numerically superior troops, remaining until every man was clear of the area. Although weakened from loss of blood and handicapped in his movements, he refused assistance until each man had reached the company lines, where he collapsed from shock and loss of blood. Sergeant Tofuri’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
