The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Charles Edwin Tegtmeyer (ASN: 0-335197), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Regimental Surgeon, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from February through July. During an enemy dive bombing attack on our position, Captain Tegtmeyer, despite the proximity of a burning ammunition dump, continued rendering first aid and supervising evacuation of casualties to a place of safety, thereby greatly minimizing possible loss of life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
