The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) August Altuf Storkman, Jr. (ASN: 0-1326937), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 10 April 1945. On that date, when Lieutenant Storkman’s platoon was pinned down by intense fire from two enemy machine guns during an assault on Schura, Germany, he courageously made a flanking advance to within thirty yards of the enemy positions and, firing his rifle from the hip, charged through a hail of fire to silence the first position. Although the devastating concentration of fire from the other enemy machine gun killed the sergeant who had accompanied him, he dauntlessly advanced upon the second enemy position and killed or wounded the men manning the gun. Second Lieutenant Storkman’s intrepid gallantry is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
