The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roy William Smith (ASN: 33426812), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 8 November 1944. During offensive action near Moyenvic, France, Private Smith, an ammunition bearer, observed a comrade fall wounded at his machine gun. Without hesitation he crawled forward under intense direct fire, gained the position, and opened fire upon the enemy. He administered first aid to the wounded gunner and remained at the gun firing at other targets. During subsequent action Private Smith was wounded but he continued to man the gun until he was wounded a second time, mortally. His heroism lives on as an inspiration to his comrades. The courageous devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class smith, at the cost of his life, exemplifies the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflects great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
