The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Robert Carl Silhavy (ASN: 0-406766), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 14th Engineer Regiment (Philippine Scouts) Philippine Division, in action against enemy forces on 17 December 1941, at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On that date, a detachment trained in demolitions by Captain Silhavy was detailed to move into the Bicol area, make contact with the advancing enemy, and to destroy highway and railroad bridges to deny their use to the enemy. At a large railroad trestle near Banga Caves, Camarines Sur, the Japanese moving down the track toward the demolition squad opened fire and forced the group to cover. Captain Silhavy attempted to blow up the bridge, but the charge that had been laid was insufficient to destroy it. Alone and covered by a single .30 caliber machine gun, he moved forward, although exposed to enemy fire the entire time, prepared charges, and successfully demolished the trestle. Captain Silhavy’s intrepid heroic and determined action in delaying the enemy advance, his personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
