The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Warren Dale Shanafelter (ASN: 33472856), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 11 November 1944. On that date, during an attack on Fort Koenigsmacker, France, the Advance of Company B was held up by fire from a strongly defended enemy pill box. Private Shanafelter voluntarily made his way to the pill box under intense enemy fire and blew a small hole in the wall with a demolition charge. Then, ignoring continued enemy shellfire, the intrepid soldier coolly placed a heavier charge in the gap and breached a large opening through which he entered the pill box and destroyed the position. Private First Class Shanafelter’s conspicuous heroism and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
